Evaluation of disfluency and rate characteristics of the speech of 75 White male subjects in five age groups (from 21 to 91) indicated significant differences in speech rate among groups. Twenty adult male nonstutterers became more fluent when pacing their speech with a metronome. The degree to which they became more fluent was within the range which has been reported for stutterers. This finding suggests that the effect of the metronome on stuttering is not primarily a result of distraction. (Author/KW)

Examined were protrusive lingual force and lingual diadochokinetic rates in 45 normal and 45 front-lisping speakers (7-12-years old). Results revealed that normal speaking Ss scored significantly higher on lingual force and diadochokinetic rate measurements, challenging the theory that lisping is purely a functional articulatory disorder. Listeners judged whether they heard a terminal fall, rise, or a flat final intonation contour in 9 sentences produced by 8 deaf children, aged 8-18.
