An Information-Sharing System for Students: The New York Experience.

Following historical background on the 46 School Library Systems in New York State, the following topics relating to the systems are discussed: (1) mandates set up for the systems by the State Board of Regents; (2) required 3-year Plans of Service which explain how the mandates will be carried out; (3) governance; (4) funding; (5) creation of automated catalogs; (6) access to serials; (7) interlibrary loan procedures; (8) delivery systems for interlibrary loans; (9) cooperative collection development; (10) promotion of awareness of resources and services among teachers and administrators; (11) staff development; and (12) achievements of the school library systems. The recommendations of a 1987 study of the school library systems by King Research are highlighted. (24 references) (MES)
