The Cultural Competence of Senior and Junior BSN Students at HBCU Environments

ProQuest LLC, N.P. Dissertation, University of Phoenix
The review of literature did not identify any previous studies on the cultural competence level of nursing students at Historically Black College and University (HBCU) environments. A descriptive comparative approach was used to examine the level of cultural competence of junior and senior baccalaureate of science in nursing (BSN) students and to determine differences in the cultural competence of these students according to selected demographic variables at two HBCUs environments. A census sample included 104 junior and 114 senior BSN students at two HBCUs in the Mid-Atlantic region. The students completed a demographic questionnaire and the Inventory for Assessing the Process of Cultural Competence Among Healthcare Providers-Student Version (IAPCC-SV) to examine their level of cultural competence. The independent samples t-test and a one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) were conducted to determine differences in cultural competence and selected demographic variables. The p value was set at .05 for statistical significance. The results of this study indicated that both the junior and senior students reported highest levels of cultural desire and the lowest levels of cultural knowledge. There were statistically higher scores for the juniors, who received continuing education or a course on cultural competence compared to those who did not in the subscales of cultural knowledge, cultural encounter, and the total cultural competence. It is recommended to replicate this study among nursing students in predominantly Caucasian schools to allow for generalizability of findings to other nursing programs around the nation. Nursing educators and leaders need to continue to provide education and continued training on cultural competence to meet the demands of a growing multicultural society.
