According to a recent study made by the National Science Foundation (NSF), racial minority groups represented about 4 percent (or 53,000) of the 1.3 million scientists and engineers in the U.S. labor force during both 1970 and 1972. The bulk of the minority chemists were in two groups: 2900 were of Oriental descent, and 2100 were blacks. (MLH)
