The Toughest Challenge
Stunden, Annie
EDUCAUSE Review, v41 n3 p32,34,36,38,40,41,42 May-Jun 2006
In this article, the author narrates her own personal experiences in organizations where implementations were part of her job. She observes based on her experiences with implementations that no matter how successful it it, it will not be good enough--and it will cost too much. The author also cites the things that she dreads most about implementation of administrative information systems. These include: (1) The implementation budget estimate will not be accepted; (2) The sponsoring organization and the financial leaders will not understand that the estimated budget is an "estimate"; (3) A sponsoring organization will not view the IT organization as a partner in the implementation but rather as a technical "body shop"; (4) A sponsoring organization will believe that it is better at managing the IT technical staff than are the IT leaders and project managers; (5) A community of users will not be sure of their requirements until they see a product, and then they will know that the product is not what they want; (6) The implementation will not go according to plan; and (7) Organization leaders will not be public champions for this work.
