A deep structure underlying sentences with modal adverbs and verbs in English is discussed. Semantic and syntactic similarities are pointed out in support of a suggestion that both surface structures have a common deep structure source. The implications of the properties of certain recursive rules are explored. It is concluded that (a) no completely coherent system of rules could allow perniciously recursive rules, and (b) certain constructions of English can only be described using perniciously recursive rules.
