An Exploratory Study of Student Volunteerism and Service Terminology
Gafarian, Dylan M.
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Hofstra University
Nationwide, institutions are adding elements of volunteerism, civic engagement, and service-learning to both their mission statements and degree completion curriculum (American Council on Education, 2022; Campus Compact, 2022; Niehaus & Kavaliauska Crain, 2013, Reed, et al, 2015). However, very little research has looked specifically at the terminology and the basic perceptions shared by those who partake in these offerings. The purpose of this study was to understand and explore the many terminologies and descriptors given to the overarching concepts that consume student community service and volunteerism at the collegiate level. Through quantitative methodology, this study investigated the perceptions of students, faculty, and staff on such terminology as found in the existing literature and further establish commonality and consistency within higher education volunteerism and service. The findings from this research will have a long-lasting impact on the standardization of terminology and create a more inclusive environment for student engagement.
