Describes an innovative three-year apprenticeship training program in metal cutting tool operation which combines a certification program from the company with an associate in arts degree in applied technology (industrial engineering) from a community college. A certificate of occupational competency is now given to vocational students in several Wisconsin high schools along with their grades. The certificate provides documented skill ratings for employers and other educators, and should be useful in articulation with postsecondary vocational schools.
