A Correlational Study between Student Placement Assessments and Student Attrition
Isbell, Corey
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Lamar University - Beaumont
This study was designed to determine if a relationship exists between placement assessment scores and student attrition for first year college students at a technical college in the Midwest. The data included de-identified student scores on four standardized assessments used by the school for admissions and course determination, as well as various demographic characteristics, for the entire population of students (N=1013). Although the results of the study show no statistically significant relationship between student placement assessment scores and student attrition, the information gleaned from this study will be important for post-secondary institutions as they search for early indicators of student attrition. The impact of this study can help institutions improve retention programs, as well as student success initiatives. Study results can be used to help determine the role student placement assessments play in a holistic student retention program.
