Assessing Student Learning in Field Courses Using Oral Exams
Hazen, Helen; Hamann, Hillary
Geography Teacher, v17 n4 p130-135 2020
Field study--in the form of field trips, fieldwork, or field courses--is identified as a core element of geographic education and training (Speights-Binet and Gamble 2009). By involving place-based, active, and experiential learning, field study is cited as an example of a High-Impact Educational Practice. Common assessment products used in field classes include field journals, reports, and presentations. In this article, the authors present some background from the literature on oral exams and their use, benefits, and challenges as well as an assessment of how orals are suited to field courses in particular. The authors then provide a sample approach to incorporating oral exams, using the example of an international geography field course.
