Navigating Sexual Conversations: A Study of the Experiences of Student Affairs Professionals at Evangelical Christian Institutions Who Educate Students on Sex, Faith, and Healthy Relationships
Abigail Davis
ProQuest LLC, Ph.D./HE Dissertation, Azusa Pacific University
Developmentally speaking, young adulthood is a time when students begin to understand how their religious beliefs influence their behavior (Fowler, 1981). For Student Affairs professionals at evangelical Christian institutions (ECIs), educating the whole student includes helping students to understand this connection with beliefs and behavior. This is especially true regarding sexual activity. This study provides an understanding of the experiences of Student Affairs professionals related to addressing students' sexual behavior and providing educational programming to help students develop healthy relationships and healthy attitudes toward sex and sexuality. A hermeneutical phenomenological approach was used to collect and analyze data from 13 participants from evangelical Christian institutions in the United States. The analysis resulted in 4 themes. These Student Affairs professionals: (a) experienced an internal pressure or burden as they addressed this topic with students, (b) described their work as being countercultural to the stereotypical culture of the United States, (c) viewed their work as pastoral in nature, and (d) felt the need to do more for their students on this topic than was currently being done. The findings led to implications on how to program on sexuality and sexual activity to address the need for congruence between beliefs and behavior and the importance of communicating the institution's values that inform policies.
