Understanding College Student Experiences with Basic Needs Insecurity through a Validation Perspective
Wayne L. Black; Brittany M. Williams
Journal of College Student Development, v66 n1 p102-108 2025
Basic needs insecurity (BNI), or insufficient access to food or housing, is a problem in U.S. higher education (Broton et al., 2022). As college students continue to negotiate the fallout of COVID-19 and its lingering economic effects, it is vital to amplify BNI as a concerning problem for campus administrators invested in students' success (Cornett & Fletcher, 2022; Goldrick-Rab, 2021; Soria, 2023). Some institutions have begun to take proactive steps to address student barriers relating to BNI (Crutchfield et al., 2020). These campus-based and government- sponsored supports are crucial to college student's success, but for campus support to succeed, students need to be aware of the resources (Broton et al., 2022; Crutchfield et al., 2020). This study used a campus validation lens to explore college students' awareness of BNI campus-based interventions. The authors use validation in the present study to help campus leaders think more inclusively and expansively about BNI. One research question guided the study: (1) To what extent are college students who experience BNI aware of campus support for BNI?
