Students as Teachers: Introduction to Two Student Essays
Kaplan, Andy
Schools: Studies in Education, v9 n2 p199-201 Fall 2012
For the past two years, the author had the privilege of sharing a course with intelligent, inventive, and diligent students. "Schools Across Borders, Schools Across Time"--very soon abbreviated and known for two years now as SABSAT--was initially a one-time experiment, a course designed to produce a student documentary on progressive and soka education. In this article, the author introduces two student essays that describe and reflect on the final projects the students created. The students detail their experiences and reflections in the essays. The extraordinary achievement of SABSAT owes a great deal to these two students. Their energy, their willingness to experiment, and above all their creative and far-reaching intelligence have led the way to one of the most profound and satisfying experiences the author has ever had in many years of teaching.
