A laboratory experiment that demonstrates the effects of various dental materials on a representative enzyme from the pulp is outlined. The experiment encourages students to consider the effects that various restorative materials and techniques might have on enzymes in the living pulp. (Author/MLW)

A study of an analytical system for evaluating class II cavity preparations in primary teeth was developed, tested, and compared with the traditional global evaluation method with respect to intraexaminer and interexaminer reliability. Interexaminer reliability was improved with the analytical system. (Author/MLW)

A teaching technique for evaluating student technical exercises is described. The technique enables the faculty to describe the student's performance, as well as to score it. A student survey revealed that the majority of students could accurately interpret the information contained on the form. (Author/MLW)

A model program in dentistry for the handicapped offered at the University of Tennessee and supported by a Robert Wood Johnson Foundation grant is described. The program includes didactic instruction, observation and seminar, and clinical practice. (JMF)

The University of Washington School of Dentistry developed a 36-month formal teacher education program in combination with joint specialty training in pedodontics and orthodontics. The rationale and structure of the original program is outlined and the reasons for its termination are discussed. (Author/MLW)

Students and faculty were polled for their reactions to a new format for grouping third- and fourth-year dental students and full- and part-time faculty for more efficient clinical instruction. Both groups felt positively about the change. More study of student-faculty relationships and of dental care level effects is recommended. (MSE)

Six ways a dentist can profit from the basic sciences are: (1) increased sensitivity to the environment, (2) improved judgment, (3) better explanations to patients, (4) enhanced ability to learn, (5) improved communication with health professionals, and (6) greater role diversity. The scope of oral biology is defined, patterns of organization and staffing of oral biology departments are examined, and the rationale for including courses in oral biology in the undergraduate curriculum and the organization and content of such courses are discussed. The University of Florida uses a comprehensive care system to teach clinical pedodontics. Several block clinics permit further experience with children. Details of the program are described, and quantitative results of patient treatment are compared with those of other clinical pedodontics programs. (MSE)

A University of Florida College of Dentistry management system is described that uses a computer to assist in the matching of patients and dental students, the monitoring of patient care, and the tracking of student clinical progress in a teaching environment that emphasizes the comprehensive patient care approach.
