A program that paired third-year veterinary students with fifth-year students for exposure to veterinary hospital procedures is described. It is noted that this experience costs little, provides important peer influence and informal peer instruction, and is voluntary. (MSE)

Greater flexibility in clinical instruction in the veterinary field through the introduction of a course in Correlative Medicine at the Western College of Veterinary Medicine is described. At Louisiana State University School of Veterinary Medicine, training in preventive medicine is incorporated into all four years of the curriculum. The curriculum is described with focus on the fourth year practical course that involves problem solving, using various herds in the area. (JMD)

The Caldwell Veterinary Teaching Center provides veterinary students with experiences in food animal medicine through a system of practitioner referrals, clinical studies, and field visits to farms. Although treatment of cases is emphasized, the main concern is the progression of examinations and tests leading to a diagnosis. (JMD)

The undergraduate surgery course of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine and Animal Science, Universiti Pertanian Malaysia, is described with focus on its experential method of teaching surgical techniques. Also discussed are the benefits of veterinary school cooperation with a large city Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA). (JMD)

The introduction of the specialties and their developing residency programs in veterinary medicine have caused problems for veterinary medical colleges. Among the problems are the tendency to pattern programs after their human medical counterparts, funding problems, program length and curriculum, and faculty and equipment requirements. (JMD)

Data from the 6th Symposium on Veterinary Medical Education, the Arthur D. Little, Inc. report, and the survey of the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine are reported as they pertain to the need for more residency programs, program quality and accreditation. The Small Animal Medicine program at the University of Georgia Veterinary Teaching Hospital is described. Instructional goals and the creation of two medicine rotations oriented to problems of different difficulty are outlined. Student evaluations that cover five categories are provided and conclusions from program experiences are drawn. (MLW)

Graduate training in clinical veterinary medicine is discussed. The options available to the student and problems that must be dealt with are presented, along with the requirements to accomplish a finely structured program that satisfies the needs of both the trainee and clinical veterinary medicine.
