A survey is reported that was undertaken by the Association for Medical School Pharmacology to assess the status of developing clinical pharmacology programs in medical schools in the United States and Canada and to determine why some schools have been unable to mount such programs. A geriatric health maintenance program, started as a community medicine elective and now an innovative model in humanistic health care, is described. Continuing education programs for pharmacists must integrate basic science knowledge with information on its practical application. Such programs are only achievable through interdisciplinary planning by the basic science and clinical practice faculties. (JMD)

Obstacles to developing training programs in geriatric medicine include shortage of faculty members and negative attitudes toward geriatrics on the part of students. The implementation of a continuity of a care clinic in a highly subspecialized Veterans Administration internal medicine training program for postgraduate medical students is described, with focus on resolving problems created by the idiosyncratic administrative features and resource limitations of the hospital. The problems and issues related to setting up an office-based program for family medicine residents are described. The role of the family preceptor and his/her need to make alterations to his/her practice to accommodate the resident, and evaluations of a recent program by both residents and preceptors are discussed. Describes a rural outreach program to provide continuing education in nursing practice to all levels of nursing personnel in rural hospitals. The University of Idaho, in cooperation with the Washington, Oregon, and Idaho (WOI) Regional Program in Veterinary Medicine, developed an off-campus facility for the study of food animal medicine. The objectives, design, and program of the regional center are described. (BH)
