Study results suggest that the level of competence needed for the advising function is not beyond the capacity of most upper-division students. Given the minimal training and supervision provided to this nearly unselected group of seniors, advising outcomes appear to be at least equal, and frequently superior to those for faculty advisors. By using multivariate statistical techniques, various demographic and descriptive variables were related to a behavioral measure and an attitudinal measure of volunteer behavior among college students.
