Cromley, Jennifer G.; Dai, Ting; Fechter, Tia; Van Boekel, Martin; Nelson, Frank E.; Dane, Aygul – Journal of Experimental Education, 2021
Reasoning skills have been clearly related to achievement in introductory undergraduate biology, a course with a high failure rate that may contribute to dropout of undergraduate STEM majors. Existing measures are focused on the experimental method, such as generating hypotheses, choosing a research method, how to control variables other than…

Gadzella, Bernadette M. – Journal of Experimental Education, 1982
A computer-assisted instruction study skills program was presented to 88 college students, while a control group did not have access to it. Scores for the experimental group on the Survey of Study Habits and Attitudes increased during the semester, while scores for the control group decreased. (Author/BW)
Descriptors: Computer Assisted Instruction, Higher Education, Program Effectiveness, Study Habits

Kitsanas, Anastasia – Journal of Experimental Education, 2002
Studied the effect of self-regulatory processes on test preparation and performance through interviews with 62 college students. As expected, high test scorers used more self-regulatory processes to enhance test preparation and performance, and self-regulation positively affected test performance. (SLD)
Descriptors: College Students, Higher Education, Interviews, Performance Factors

Furukawa, James M.; Shewell, Tanya – Journal of Experimental Education, 1971
The purpose of this investigation was to test the efficacy of a study method which was designed to reduce or eliminate verbal learning differences between high and low learning ability Ss. (Authors)
Descriptors: Individual Differences, Learning, Measurement, Memory

Dorsel, Thomas N. – Journal of Experimental Education, 1976
A 2 X 2 factorial design employing two levels each of type of method and preference for method was used to evaluate the respective effects of the factors on comprehension. (Editor)
Descriptors: Content Area Reading, Educational Research, Lecture Method, Reading Comprehension

Tuckman, Bruce W. – Journal of Experimental Education, 1998
Providing an incentive to make procrastinators study by giving a test on each chapter was compared with providing a learning strategy by requiring students to outline each chapter, with 82 students classified by level of procrastination. There was an advantage of almost 12% for the test condition among high procrastinators. (SLD)

Rohr, Michael E.; Ayers, Jerry B. – Journal of Experimental Education, 1973
The present study has concerned itself with attempting to identify information that would be readily accessible to the classroom teacher at the beginning of the term in order that he might aid those who are potential non-achievers. (Author)
Descriptors: Academic Achievement, Course Evaluation, Expectation, Grade Point Average

McDougall, Dennis; Granby, Cheryl – Journal of Experimental Education, 1996
Results of a study with 40 undergraduates indicate that those who expected that the instructor would call on them at random completed more assignments, recalled more from the assignments, and had more confidence in their recall. Results suggest the importance of in-class questioning methods for student accountability. (SLD)

McCoy, James F.; And Others – Journal of Experimental Education, 1977
Investigates the comparative effects of written as opposed to verbally stated instructions and specification of contingencies, with the written contract containing the typically used written agreement. These procedures were applied to self-managed, naturalistic behaviors, and compared to self-monitoring alone. Study-question answering and amount…

Dorsel, Thomas N.; Cundiff, Gary W. – Journal of Experimental Education, 1979
The effect of cheat-sheets on later test performance was investigated. Results indicated poorer test performance when a cheat-sheet was made and not used, compared to when it was made and used, not made, or made with the awareness that it could not be used during testing. (Author/MH)
Descriptors: Academic Achievement, Cheating, Cues, Higher Education

Davis, J. Kent; Annis, Linda – Journal of Experimental Education, 1978
Undergraduates were grouped into various study and review conditions to determine the effect of using a preferred or nonpreferred study technique and of being familiar or unfamiliar with an assigned reading topic. Students who preferred reading and were familiar with the topic achieved the best performance after reading. (Author/GDC)
Descriptors: Cognitive Style, Factual Reading, Higher Education, Knowledge Level

Vitale, Michael R.; Hebbler, Stephen W. – Journal of Experimental Education, 1978
Six fourth graders learned paired associates of their choice under high and low reinforcement conditions. Equivalent lists were also studied as homework on which correct test responses were reinforced equally. The children preferred to study and learned more on the highly reinforced lists during the experimental sessions. (Author/GDC)

Katayama, Andrew D.; Crooks, Steven M. – Journal of Experimental Education, 2003
The authors investigated in this study the effects of two electronic notes conditions (complete vs. partial) and two testing conditions (immediate vs. delayed) on three types of tests (fact, structure, and application). A 2 x 2 factorial multivariate analysis of variance (MANOVA) yielded no significant main effects for notes conditions on the fact…

Powers, Sandra M.; Powers, William A. – Journal of Experimental Education, 1978
Introductory psychology students were randomly assigned to two experimental groups. For the first half of the class term, only Group 1 received instructor-prepared notes. In the second half of their term, only Group 2 did. Achievement did not differ until phase two, when Group 1 had significantly lower performance. (SJL)

Olivarez, Arturo, Jr.; Tallent-Runnels, Mary K. – Journal of Experimental Education, 1994
The latent composition of the Learning and Study Strategies Inventory for High School (LASSI-HS) was studied through exploratory and confirmatory factor analysis of results from 367 ninth-grade students. Evidence supports a three-factor model. Interrelationships among the constructs are examined, and use of the instrument is discussed. (SLD)
