Findings of this study indicate that the degree of adequacy varies and identify three major needs: (1) prescriptive measures to ensure adequate subject analysis; (2) new subject heads to provide greater topic and race specificity; and (3) more research as the basis for improvement of present practices or the design of a new system. Estimates of frequency of spelling errors are made based on a sample of 3,600 index terms drawn from 11 bibliographic data bases. The impact of these errors is discussed by tape supplier, tape user, and end user; with some suggestions for search strategies.
