A comparative analysis of case studies indicates that horizontal evaluation of student teachers provides methods of supervision that go beyond a focus on prescriptive practice. The quality of field supervision of student teachers is a major problem in preservice teacher education. A pilot study of supervising teachers showed positive trends when these teachers were enrolled in a course to increase flexibility through role-taking experiences. Researchers investigated the use of a one-way mechanical third ear communication device that allows prompting by the student teachers' supervisors during teaching. Results showed that some student teachers can and do effect immediate change in teaching behavior during the teaching process while receiving prompts via the device. (SM)
