The Production of Subject Anaphoric Devices: A Comparative Study of Italian L2 and Heritage Speakers

This study investigates the production of Italian subject anaphoric devices by monolinguals (L1s), second language speakers (L2s), and heritage language speakers (HLs) with Belgian Dutch as their first or dominant language. Extensive research has shown that bilinguals tend to overuse explicit anaphoric devices compared to monolinguals. While this pattern has been documented across various bilingual profiles, studies directly comparing L2s and HLs remain limited. Such a comparison is particularly relevant for phenomena at the syntax-discourse interface, like anaphoric subject production, where the effects of age of onset of acquisition remain unclear. In this study, we investigate whether HLs align more closely with L1s in their production of subject anaphoric devices or whether both HLs and L2s use more explicit devices than monolinguals. Participants realized a storytelling task and the data was analyzed with a novel approach that combines Correspondence Analysis with Multinomial Mixed-effects modeling. The results show that HLs generally align with L1s but exhibit more variation in their use of anaphoric subjects. In contrast, L2s tend to be more explicit, particularly using more lexical phrases in topic continuity contexts. These results highlight the effect of age of onset of acquisition in shaping bilinguals' referential strategies, suggesting future research directions.
