Brumfit, Christopher J. – System, 1979
Second language learners must acquire a generative system of grammar. There is, as yet, no way of describing notions in generative terms. Long-term syllabuses will have to continue to be syntactically based, but the incorporation of notions from a checklist is acceptable. (Author/JB)

Milner, Jean-Claude – Langue Francaise, 1979
Examines the relationship of "ne" and its accompanying particles ("pas,""plus,""jamais,""personne," etc.) in the French negation system, with special reference to subject opacity. (AM)

Light, Timothy – Journal of Chinese Linguistics, 1979
Argues that the fundamental word order of Mandarin Chinese is SVO (Subject-Verb-Object), and describes word order change from Old Chinese to Modern Chinese. (AM)

Craig, Holly K.; Gallagher, Tanya M. – Journal of Speech and Hearing Research, 1979
The syntactic nonconversational features of monologue speech were analyzed in nine normal Ss (ages 2 and 3 years), three at each of R.Brown's three language developmental stages. (Author/PHR)

Morsbach, Gisela; Steel, Pamela M. – Journal of Child Language, 1976
This paper discusses C. Chomsky's 1969 paper on children's syntactic development and the subsequent studies made to test her findings. Later studies indicate that Chomsky's results were not clearly differentiated, and a slight alteration in procedure changes results significantly. (CHK)

Pynte, Joel; Prieur, Benedicte – Language and Cognitive Processes, 1996
The role of prosodic breaks (PB) in the parsing of locally ambiguous noun phrases (NP) + verb (V) + NP + prepositional phrase (PP) was examined in four word-monitoring experiments. Results indicate that PBs can influence sentence parsing. The article discusses possible mechanisms in the framework of two models. (32 references) (Author/CK)

Bayer, Samuel – Language, 1996
Argues that the account of coordination of unlike categories ought to be unified with the account of feature neutralization under phonological identity. Further argues that this unified account ought not be couched in terms of string of features, but rather in terms of the logic of categories. Study concludes with a discussion of the interactions…

Brooks, Patricia J.; Braine, Martin D. S. – Cognition, 1996
Four- to 10-year olds viewed pictures in which all or some individuals pictured were doing something to all or some objects pictured. Children indicated which sentences, using "all" or "each" to modify the subject or object, applied to the pictures. In choosing the applicable sentence, children showed little difficulty with…

Juffs, Alan – Studies in Second Language Acquisition, 2001
Discusses key points raised in the articles in this special issue of the journal. Suggests progress is being made in using complementary theories of the role of lexical representation, prediction, and crosslinguistic variation to get a full picture of this complex area of lexico-morhposyntactic knowledge. (Author/VWL)

Naigles, Letitia – Journal of Child Language, 1990
Provides an experimental validation of Landau and Gleitman's (1985) syntactic bootstrapping procedure on how children may use syntactic information to learn new verbs. The children's choice of the correct referent for a given verb versus a nonsense verb in two syntactic structures is explained. (37 references) (GLR)

Bohannon III, John Neil; Stanowicz, Laura – Developmental Psychology, 1988
When 16 parents' and 13 nonparents' conversations with children were examined for evidence of adults' differential responses to children's syntactic, phonological, and semantic errors, results indicated that adults tended to respond differentially to children's language mistakes, with parents showing greater sensitivity than non-parents. Rossi, Franca; Pontecorvo, Clotilde – Rassegna Italiana di Linguistica Applicata, 1989
The results of a study that examined the semantic and the morph-syntactic awareness of 60 elementary school children are presented. Subjects were given the tasks of substituting a new word for each word indicated in a sentence, and choosing to eliminate any word in a sentence in order to insert a new one. (CFM)

Forbes, James N.; Farrar, M. Jeffrey – Cognitive Development, 1993
Study of 3 and 7 year olds and adults examined role that changes in continuity, direction, instrument, and causative agent play in children's and adults' initial assumptions about meaning of novel motion verbs and events. Subjects made similar initial assumptions, but children generalized more conservatively than adults to all change types in…
