Taylor, Christine M.; And Others – Information Technology and Libraries, 1989
Defines the interactive timeout interval (ITI) as the amount of time that is allowed to lapse between user entries before the computer assumes that the terminal is abandoned and stops polling it. A method for determining optimal ITI, thereby increasing system efficiency of online catalogs, is demonstrated. (10 references) (CLB)

Primich, Tracy; Richardson, Caroline – Acquisitions Librarian, 2006
The Integrated Library System remains a true innovation that forms the baseline of service provided by the contemporary library. The purpose of this paper is to take a moment and reflect upon this innovation, and also to comment about ways to boost and revive innovative endeavors that can further develop the ILS. (Contains 1 table.)

Fokker, Dirk W. – Electronic Library, 1989
Argues that users' needs should play a more prominent role in the design or choice of an online catalog in a specific library, and outlines requirements which enhance ease of use. Areas discussed include operational control, search formulation control, access points, output control, user assistance, and hardware requirements. (nine references)…

Dougherty, Richard M.; Bechtel, Joan – Journal of Academic Librarianship, 1988
The first of two articles discusses the obstacles to and advantages of cooperative systems planning and development by a team of academic librarians and computing center staff. The second examines the differences in funding approaches to libraries and computer centers, and budgetary problems involved when the two organizations share computer…

Bates, Marcia J. – Library Resources and Technical Services, 1989
Argues that online search capabilities are a form of indexing and that access is determined by the total mix of preexisting and added "search capability" indexing. The design of a "superthesaurus," geared to the needs of users and to online rather than manual searching, is proposed as part of a user friendly interface. (19…

Lynch, Clifford A.; Berger, Michael G. – Information Technology and Libraries, 1989
Describes a pilot project by the University of California to provide access to biomedical and health sciences literature through the integration of the MEDLINE database into the University's MELVYL online union catalog. The discussion covers the design, implementation and evaluation of the system, current planning efforts, and key technical and…

Jones, Richard M. – Journal of the American Society for Information Science, 1989
Describes online catalog research being conducted in Europe in the areas of interaction and interface design, subject access, functional improvement through the application of information retrieval techniques, and library networks. Three operational online catalogs, not available outside Europe, are discussed. (30 references) (CLB)
Descriptors: Foreign Countries, Information Retrieval, Library Networks, Library Research

Bailey, Charles W., Jr. – Library Hi Tech, 1990
Surveys four possible types of multimedia computer systems: hypermedia, multimedia database, multimedia message, and virtual reality systems. The potential use of multimedia computer systems as public access systems in libraries is discussed, including fiscal, legal, organizational, standardization, and technological challenges that would have to…
Descriptors: Computer Networks, Electronic Mail, Expert Systems, Hypermedia

Matthews, Joseph R. – Library Trends, 1987
Presents detailed guidelines based on the literature for screen layout and design of online catalogs, and discusses the potential advantages in terms of number of transactions per hour and user satisfaction. Further research questions are suggested and an extensive bibliography is provided. (CLB)
Descriptors: Computer Graphics, Display Systems, Guidelines, Information Systems

Cochrane, Pauline A. – Technicalities, 1989
Reviews the problems of users of online public access catalogs and argues that it is necessary to think of all searching problems as systems problems rather than user failures, and to concentrate research in the area of systems enhancements. A list of improved tools needed for subject searching in online catalogs is identified. (CLB)
Descriptors: Online Catalogs, Online Searching, Research Needs, Search Strategies

Kaplan, Denise, Ed. – Library Hi Tech, 1990
Eight authors discuss five questions related to user searching of online catalogs: What user needs can be met by online assistance? Should assistance be tailored to particular groups? Should there be more than one level of assistance? Do users learn through computer-assisted instruction? and Will increased system friendliness eliminate the need…

Markey, Karen – Journal of Academic Librarianship, 1989
An online retrieval test was conducted using an experimental online catalog that provided several different subject searching strategies. Analyses of test data suggest that users expected alphabetical searches to provide lists of assigned subject headings conceptually related to their topics. System designers can now respond to their expectations.…

Culkin, Patricia B. – Information Technology and Libraries, 1989
Discusses the need to reassess the objectives of online public access catalogs and how those objectives might be met before costly investments are made in electronic versions of "other data" for online catalogs. Several objectives are outlined and their feasibility in the modern telecommunications environment is examined. (two references) (CLB)

Leggate, Peter – Information Services and Use, 1988
Describes the development of Bookshelf, a multi-user microcomputer system for small libraries that uses an integrated software package. The discussion covers the design parameters of the package, which were based on a survey of seven small libraries, and some characteristics of the software. (three notes with references) (CLB)
