Exploring the use and effectiveness of current awareness (CA) methods, especially selective dissemination of information (SDI) among chemists at Canadian universities, this study focuses on the perceived dispersal of information, use of various CA methods, time spent on CA, perceived success in CA, and CA efficiency. Describes how library decision-making was enhanced by a systematic study of patrons, services, and effectiveness based on the concept known as performance measures for public libraries. Improvements in the data gathering and analysis techniques are noted; also provided are survey instruments, examples of selected revised forms, and references. (SW)

Concludes that evaluations of library instruction based on library use present a useful picture of the impact of instruction within the context of program objectives. Yet to be found, however, is a methodology that will express the role student motivation and maturation play in the development of effective library skills. (RAA)
