The importance of counseling services for parents of children with a physical or educational disability is widely acknowledged. The article explores the process whereby parents in need of counseling are identified, concluding that teachers' views of a child's behavior, rather than feedback from parents, result in referrals. Results indicated that, compared to children from intact homes, those living with mothers only had more problems on all scales; those with fathers only, more socialized delinquency; those with mothers and stepfathers, more conduct problems and socialized delinquency; and those with fathers and stepmothers, more conduct problems.
