Diversifying the Field: An Exploration of Grow Your Own Programming for Immigrant Teachers
Tasha Graff
ProQuest LLC, Ph.D. Dissertation, University of Southern Maine
As the student population of public schools in the United States grows increasingly racially diverse, the majority of teachers remain White. Research indicates the positive impact a racially diverse teaching force has on the student experience and outcomes, and many school districts and states across the country are looking for ways to diversify the teaching corps. One method gaining traction in various states is the Grow Your Own (GYO) teacher training model, which aims to recruit, train, hire and retain local community members as teachers. This ethnographic case study describes Teach Up (a pseudonym), a GYO program designed for recent immigrants who were teachers in their home countries before coming to the U.S. and examines the program's influence on the diversity of teaching staff within its district. Guided by the frameworks of Community Cultural Wealth (CCW) and Critical Race Theory (CRT), the researcher used semi structured interviews with eight graduates, three mentor teachers, and four instructors/administrators from the program, and found that Teach Up does influence the teaching diversity of its local district. While the goal of Teach Up was to place classroom teachers, this study found that the program had more success placing education technicians (45%) than teachers (32%). The study concludes with implications for the future of the program, as well as future longitudinal research on retention.
