Make the Most of Job-Embedded Teacher Preparation
Catherine Ginel
Learning Professional, v46 n2 p42-46 2025
A significant teacher shortage persists in K-12 education, with estimates of vacancies ranging from 36,000 to 52,000 across the United States (Nguyen et al., 2022). To tackle this issue many states have developed ways to boost the teacher supply, such as non-traditional licensure pathways. In Tennessee, one type of non-traditional educator preparation program is a job-embedded program where candidates take coursework while working as a teacher of record, fully responsible for student learning (Tennessee Department of Education, 2023; Tooley, 2023). This allows teachers to start their educator preparation program and begin their teaching careers at the same time. Research shows a multifaceted induction program is key to new teacher success, satisfaction, and retention (Glazerman et al., 2010; Ingersoll & Smith, 2004; Ingersoll & Strong, 2011; Keese et al., 2023), and such support is likely to be especially important for alternatively certified teachers. Schools can provide this kind of multifaceted support through aligned professional learning, instructional coaching, and directly connecting job-embedded programs and school districts.
