A laboratory simulation was conducted to assess teacher selection decision making from the perspective of teachers. Results indicate that personality characteristics of interviewers influence decisions made by applicants. Implications are discussed. (MT)

This article discusses a conceptual model for understanding, describing, and explaining personnel selection processes and activities. Four theoretical strands--decision theory, impression formation, inference theory, and rating theory--are woven together as the basis for a proposed model to be used by administrators who are selecting teachers. Several studies have suggested that screening decisions made by principals are biased by the age of teacher candidates. This study analyzed the effects of age, position desired, quality of information, and quantity of information about the candidate on screening decisions. Results are discussed. (Author/MT)
