Developing Skills of Assistant Teachers: A Staff Development Guide.
Leigh, Cindy; And Others
Each of the four sections of this staff development guide focuses on areas of skills which assistant teachers must possess, namely, skills in (1) communication and interaction, (2) child development and discipline, (3) management and organization, and (4) facilitation of learning in activity centers. Communication skills are discussed in terms of the standard use of grammar, correct spelling, and standard lettering techniques. Material concerning interaction with children explores questioning techniques, language exerience techniques, invented spelling, and labeling. Principles of child development and techniques of discipline are discussed. Discussion of management and organizational skills provides useful tips. In the final section of the text, activities are suggested for assistant teachers to use in activity centers for housekeeping, blocks, language and library, art, science, math, music and movement, woodworking, cooking, and sand and water. Approximately one-half of the guide consists of designs for transparencies to be used in training assistant teachers. (RH)
