Swanson, David H.; Denton, Jon J. – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 1977
Compares student achievement and retention scores of secondary school chemistry students who were involved in: (1) learning-for-mastery, (2) personalized system of instruction and (3) control (independent study) modes of remediation work. Higher retention and more objectives were recorded by the learning-for-mastery group. (CP)

Idar, Joshua; Ganiel, Uri – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 1985
A remedial instructional strategy (developed and implemented in ninth-grade physics classes) was found to significantly affect low/mixed ability students' achievement. The method was developed on the basis of a needs assessment of students' backgrounds and a detailed task analysis of the physics course's cognitive demands. (JN)

Blum, Abraham – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 1979
Investigates the effectiveness of a structured learning game in overcoming learning difficulties encountered by Israeli students when studying the life cycles of fungi because of lack of structural conceptualization. The Fungi Life Cycle Game (FLCG) was used by undergraduate students enrolled in a phytopathology course. (HM)

Yeany, Russell H.; Miller, P. Ann – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 1983
Reviews and analyzes results of experimental studies based on diagnostic prescriptive instruction as it affects science achievement. Results indicate such instruction significantly and positively influences science achievement, but that there is no clear indication that use of prescription/remediation in addition to diagnosis brings about…

Piquette, Jeff S.; Heikkinen, Henry W. – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 2005
This study explores general-chemistry instructors' awareness of and ability to identify and address common student learning obstacles in chemical equilibrium. Reported instructor strategies directed at remediating student alternate conceptions were investigated and compared with successful, literature-based conceptual change methods. Fifty-two…
