Mathews, Adam J.; DeChano-Cook, Lisa M.; Bloom, Cynthia – Journal of Geography, 2023
The objective of this research was to determine if and to what extent students' learning of geographic concepts can be improved through incorporation of hands-on play with Play-Doh® and LEGO® and geospatial technologies, specifically drones. The project team conducted six months of biweekly, collaborative instruction at Comstock Middle School in…

Burde, Jan-Philipp; Weatherby, Thomas Sean; Kronenberger, Arthur – Physics Education, 2021
Understanding simple electric DC circuits often represents a great challenge to many students in lower secondary schools. As a result, students' knowledge of this subject is often dominated by alternative conceptions, even after instruction. One of the reasons for these learning difficulties is the intangibility of key physical quantities and…

Giretti, Alberto; Lemma, Massimo; Zambelli, Matteo; Meana, Franco Ripa di – International Association for Development of the Information Society, 2022
In this paper we illustrate the architecture of the °'°Kobi system, which is aimed at supporting students' education in artistic or design activities. We will outline the scientific and methodological foundations of the educational approach aimed at enhancing the artistic conception and the design ideation. The functional requirements and the…

Muhlisin, Ahmad – Online Submission, 2019
The course of science is considered to boring and difficult course to be understood by students of science education program. The aims of this research are examine the effect of RMS learning model in mastering the students concepts; 2) examine the effect of difference academic ability in mastering students concept; 3) examine the effect of…

Amin, Tamer G. – International Journal of Science Education, 2015
Many of the goals of research on conceptual metaphor in science education overlap with the goals of research on conceptual change. The relevance of a conceptual metaphor perspective to the study of conceptual change has already been discussed. However, a substantial body of literature on conceptual metaphor in science education has now emerged.…

Shallcross, David C. – Journal of Education for Sustainable Development, 2016
Concept maps are used to assess student and cohort learning of sustainable development. The concept maps of 732 first-year engineering students were individually analyzed to detect patterns of learning and areas that were not well understood. Students were given 20 minutes each to prepare a concept map of at least 20 concepts using paper and pen.…

Núñez, Rafael – International Journal of Science Education, 2015
The last couple of decades have seen an enormous development in the study of embodied cognition through the investigation of conceptual mappings, such as conceptual metaphor and conceptual blending. Initially, this progress was achieved at a theoretical level, and more recently through empirical research in basic science--from psycholinguistics,…

Oh, Jun-Young; Lee, Hyonyong; Lee, Sung-Soon – Research in Science & Technological Education, 2017
Background: Kuhn's model of science has been widely influential, but in this paper, it is argued that it is more appropriate to consider constructivist learning within science education as a research program in the sense used by Lakatos. Purpose/Hypothesis: This study offers teaching strategies and their corresponding instructional sequences based…

Jones, Mark; van Kessel, Gisela; Swisher, Laura; Beckstead, Jason; Edwards, Ian – Assessment & Evaluation in Higher Education, 2014
Assessment of student learning in complex areas is challenging, particularly when there is interest in students' deeper understanding and connectivity of concepts. Assessment of ethics learning has been limited by lack of consensus regarding what is effective and an overfocus on quantification at the expense of clinical or ethical relevance.…

Newcombe, Nora S.; Levine, Susan C.; Mix, Kelly S. – Grantee Submission, 2015
There are many continuous quantitative dimensions in the physical world. Philosophical, psychological and neural work has focused mostly on space and number. However, there are other important continuous dimensions (e.g., time, mass). Moreover, space can be broken down into more specific dimensions (e.g., length, area, density) and number can be…

Icoz, Kutay; Sanalan, Vehbi A.; Ozdemir, Esra Benli; Kaya, Sukru; Cakar, Mehmet Akif – Educational Sciences: Theory and Practice, 2015
Ontologies have often been recommended for E-learning systems, but few efforts have successfully incorporated student data to represent knowledge conceptualizations. Defining key concepts and their relations between each other establishes the backbone of our E-learning system. The system guides an individual student through his/her course by…

Da-Silva, Consuelo; Mellado, Vicente; Ruiz, Constantino; Porlan, Rafael – Science Education, 2007
We describe a longitudinal study of a secondary education biology teacher at two moments in her career (1993-2002), determining the changes in her conceptions of the nature of science and its teaching and learning, and the factors that favored or hindered such changes. The changes were analyzed using cognitive maps, constructed on the basis of the…

Tessmer, Martin; And Others – 1989
The concept model addressed in this paper is the set of assumptions, data, and inferences used in the instructional design of concept learning. A new way of looking at concepts is presented that takes into account the declarative and metacognitive components of concept learning and use. Implications for instruction are outlined. The paper is…

Zook, Kevin B.; Di Vesta, Francis J. – Journal of Educational Psychology, 1991
The role of analogical mapping in the formation of conceptual misrepresentations was studied by analyzing target-domain inferences generated by 193 third graders learning from an analogy. Explicit knowledge of the instructional goal decreased the number of conflicting inferences. Implications for learning are discussed. (SLD)

Smith, Carol; Unger, Chris – Journal of the Learning Sciences, 1997
Explores student ability to differentiate and make mappings between quantities in different domains before and after a relevant curricular experience. Contends that conceptual bootstrapping involves a multistepped mapping process that is facilitated through classroom dialog, problem solving, and instruction. (Author/DKM)
