Kodama, K. – Physics Education, 2009
We describe a simple experiment demonstrating the variation in magnitude of a magnetic field with distance. The method described requires only an ordinary magnetic compass and a permanent magnet. The proposed graphical analysis illustrates a unique method for deducing a general rule of magnetostatics. (Contains 1 table and 6 figures.)

Saglam, Murat – Asia-Pacific Forum on Science Learning and Teaching, 2010
This study aims to explore problem-based learning (PBL) in conjunction with students' confidence in the basic ideas of electromagnetism and their motivational orientations and learning strategies. The 78 first-year geology and geophysics students followed a three-week PBL instruction in electromagnetism. The students' confidence was assessed…

Graham, Stephan Alan – Journal of Geological Education, 1983
Discusses five recent advances in sedimentary tectonics, noting how they are incorporated into college curricula. Advances discussed include basin type, tectonic setting, facies analysis (in conjunction with basin type/setting), stratigraphic analysis of reflection seismic data, and quantitative analysis of subsidence histories of sedimentary…
Descriptors: College Science, Geology, Geophysics, Graduate Study

Whithers, Mitchell M. – Physics Teacher, 1993
Presents a mathematical explanation for the development of tidal activity. (MVL)
Descriptors: Earth Science, Geophysics, Higher Education, Mathematical Applications

Whisonant, Robert Clyde; Watts, Chester Frederick – Journal of Geological Education, 1989
A method of plotting planes on stereonets is described including great circles, poles, and dip vectors. Teaching applications of dip vectors in engineering geology and structural geology are discussed. (CW)
Descriptors: College Science, Engineering Education, Geology, Geophysics

McCartney, Kevin; Loper, David E. – Journal of Geological Education, 1989
Discusses the origin of the catastrophic event as to whether it was an episodic process or of extraterrestrial or endogenous origin. Develops a model of a volcanic mechanism to produce shocked quartz like those found in the Deccan basalts. (MVL)
Descriptors: College Science, Crystallography, Earth Science, Geology

Tinker, John Richard, Jr. – Journal of Geological Education, 1989
Discusses a course at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire which improved instruction in physical hydrogeology, chemical hydrogeology, and water resources. Describes 14 laboratory activities including objectives, methods, and a list of equipment needed. (Author/MVL)
Descriptors: Chemical Nomenclature, Chemistry, College Science, Course Content
