The Perception of Educators on Service Learning for High School Students: A Case Study
Gabriele Farner
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Missouri Baptist University
Service learning is a new pedagogical approach that has not been comprehensively appraised compared to customary teaching approaches. Service learning entails learning concepts in class, volunteering with non-profit or social service assemblages, and engaging in reflective undertakings to broaden the understanding of concepts taught in class. The study is explanatory research to identify educators' perceptions toward service learning approaches and addressed low participation rates in service learning opportunities. The study design was qualitative. The data collection tools were semi-structured interviews, follow-up surveys, and review of data published on the state website. Thematic analysis of participants' views revealed four emerging themes related to the inclusion of service learning into the curriculum: the need for partnership, professional training in service learning, attitudinal change among the learners, and a robust evaluation system. The findings of the analysis entailed incorporating service learning activities requiring educators to give some freedom to students on service learning choices while being flexible in curriculum delivery and having a student-centered approach to teaching. Many educators have not participated in any relevant training related to service learning and there were barriers to service learning, including the lack of commitment from students as well as time and financial constraints. A recommendation from this study was to provide professional development for educators to enhance their service learning competencies, incorporate service learning into the curriculum and course crediting, and identify enthusiastic service learning adult learners. Institutions that develop effective means of appraising service learning programs will benefit the most. [The dissertation citations contained here are published with the permission of ProQuest LLC.
