Consistent with national and international trends, K-12 classrooms in the United States reflect the shift towards increased levels of diversity. Elementary classrooms continue to flourish with students who possess an abundance of cultural and personal experiences. The United States is becoming not only more culturally and linguistically diverse, but religiously diverse as well. In contrast to their students, most teachers come from Christian based backgrounds and have limited knowledge of other religions. Many teacher education programs provide inadequate multicultural educational opportunities in order to prepare teachers to teach diverse student populations. Public schools and universities in the United States typically represent the general political and social milieu, which is mainly Christian. As a result, teacher education programs are mainly oriented implicitly around Christian beliefs. Learning about world religions (as opposed to teaching religious beliefs) as part of social studies can provide a space for students and teachers to have conversations about religious diversity in a respectful, balanced manner.
