Personal Narrative Performance in the Classroom: A Teaching Tool
Montalbano, Lori; Ige, Dorothy W.
Communication Teacher, v25 n2 p100-107 2011
Personal narratives can be useful epistemological tools or qualitative study methods that promote alternative ways of knowing in the classroom. Promoting interactive and meaningful classroom experiences involves motivating students in creative and innovative ways. In this essay, the authors discuss the use of personal narration as a pedagogical tool for understanding oneself, the students, and the communities in which people live. They focus on personal narrative performance (PNP) that can take place in both performance and non-performance classes, citing two pedagogical exercises that they use in the courses they teach. Additionally, they discuss the process of gathering and transcribing narratives in an attempt to gain experiential knowledge through performance or retelling of narrative stories. Specifically, they explore the question: "How can we ethically engage and have our students understand communication, self-disclosure, and empowerment through PNP exercises?" A list of references and suggested readings is included.
