When You Can't Get out: "Strategies for Supporting Community-Based Instruction"
Steere, Daniel E.; DiPipi-Hoy, Caroline
TEACHING Exceptional Children, v45 n2 p60-67 Nov-Dec 2012
Although community-based instruction (CBI) is an essential component of an effective educational program for students with severe disabilities, teachers frequently struggle to implement such instruction on a frequent and consistent enough basis for students to learn functional skills quickly and efficiently. This article describes evidence-based practices that can be implemented within a school setting and that can enhance the impact of CBI, thereby helping students with severe disabilities master functional skills as rapidly as possible. These instructional practices, including general case instruction, video-based instruction, social stories, and simulations, are used to increase student exposure to the variety of demands that they will encounter in the community. We also discuss the steps that teachers need to take in order to select the most appropriate instructional practices. (Contains 2 tables.)
