The effects of competitive treatments on performance, interest, and retention were examined with the use of a ten-day vocabulary task administered in sixty-six fifth grade classrooms. Neither performance nor retention was increased under the competitive treatments. (CK)

This article explains how check lists and videotapes can be used to provide feedback about students' performance in sports and physical education. The techniques described can be adapted for teaching most sports skills. Sample check lists for golf and tennis skills are included. (PP)

Reports on an experiment in which one group of high school students was taught using Total Physical Response (TPR) for 20 minutes a day and a control group was taught by the usual manner. Results showed students in the TPR group scored better on standard unit tests and expressed greater satisfaction with their teacher and course. (EKN)
