Choo, Sam; Park, Sunhi; Nelson, Nancy J. – Learning Disability Quarterly, 2021
Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) education initiatives have placed pressure on teachers to bring technology tools into classroom, including three-dimensional (3D) printing. Yet, little research has examined what specific math skills are required for 3D printing technology. This article describes a follow-up analysis of…

Banks, Kathleen – Educational Assessment, 2009
The purpose of this article is to describe and demonstrate a three-step process of using differential distractor functioning (DDF) in a post hoc analysis to understand sources of differential item functioning (DIF) in multiple-choice testing. The process is demonstrated on two multiple-choice tests that used complex alternatives (e.g., "No…

Young, John W.; Cho, Yeonsuk; Ling, Guangming; Cline, Fred; Steinberg, Jonathan; Stone, Elizabeth – Educational Assessment, 2008
English language learners (ELLs) constitute one of the fastest growing subpopulations of students in the United States. It is important to determine whether the assessments used by states in determining students' proficiencies are valid and fair for ELLs. This study focused on several standards-based assessments in mathematics and science…

Qualls, Audrey L. – 1981
Teacher perceptions of standardized achievement test items, drawn mainly from the Iowa Tests of Basic Skills (ITBS), as possibly favoring black or white pupils was investigated. Teacher' ratings were compared across race of raters, black and white; item types; favoring blacks and favoring whites; and six subtests. Ratings were also compared with…

Judith Kleinfield; And Others – 1991
Addressing concerns of some Alaska educators and parents about the fairness of the Iowa Tests of Basic Skills (ITBS), this paper clarifies what can be expected of norm-referenced tests and examines the extent to which the results of the Alaska Statewide Student Assessment may be affected by test bias. Although some test items may ask questions…

Dean, Raymond S. – Journal of School Psychology, 1979
The reliability and predictive validity of the WISC-R was investigated with 46 Mexican-American children. Approximately a year and a half after the administration of the WISC-R, scores on the Iowa Tests of Basic Skills were collected. Results indicated that the WISC-R meets minimum requirements of reliability and predictive validity with…

Lewis, Joan D.; DeCamp-Fritson, Stephanie S.; Ramage, Jean C.; McFarland, Max A.; Archwamety, Teara – Multicultural Education, 2007
The purpose of this study was to compare the effectiveness of the Raven's Standard Progressive Matrices, the Naglieri Nonverbal Abilities Test (NNAT), and the Iowa Test of Basic Skills (ITBS) in selecting for ethnically diverse students who may be gifted. The participants of the study were 175 students enrolled in Grades 3-5 and Grade 8 in a…

Plake, Barbara S.; And Others – 1978
Three levels of the Iowa Tests of Basic Skills were studied to disclose the possible existence of sex bias in mathematics test items. Two mathematics tests (mathematical concepts and mathematics problem solving) and two comparison verbal tests (vocabulary and reading) were selected for analysis at three levels--grades 3, 6, and 8. Samples of 480…

Williams, Robert L.; And Others – Journal of Non-White Concerns in Personnel and Guidance, 1978
This research examines the effects of test format on achievement-test performances of Black children. Multiple-choice test items containing distractors (e.g., all correct, all incorrect) penalize Black children, since distractors appear to serve as blocking agents. The results also suggest that distractors encourage guessing. (Author/DOW)

Ekstrom, Ruth B.; And Others – Educational Horizons, 1979
Content analyses for sex bias were conducted on items from three widely-used achievement tests which together span the grade levels 1-12. A significant but modest correlation was found between an item's content bias and performance on that item by male and female students. (SJL)

Plake, Barbara S.; And Others – Psychology of Women Quarterly, 1981
Investigated the Mathematics Problem Solving (MPS) and Mathematics Concepts (MC) subtests of the Iowa Tests of Basic Skills for content and psychometric item bias at grades three, six, and eight. Identified items which favored either males or females. Found no skill classification, item content, or location trends. (Author/JAC)

Silverman, Bernard – Journal of School Psychology, 1979
The average grade equivalent reading comprehension scores of students in Black schools are compared to those of students in White schools under two forms of test administration. Kolen, Michael J.; Hoover, H. D. – 1982
The reliabilities of 6 item bias indices and correlations among them were investigated for each of the 11 tests of the Iowa Tests of Basic Skills (ITBS). The difficulty and delta indices detected group differences in relative item difficulty. Biserial and point biserial indices detected group differences in item discrimination. The Scheuneman and…

Donlon, Thomas F.; And Others – 1977
The content of selected major achievement tests is examined for bias in the frequency of references to the male and the female sex. In spring 1986 Anglo students received higher scores than Blacks or Hispanics on the Iowa Tests of Basic Skills (ITBS), on all subtests and at all grade levels in the Denver (Colorado) Public Schools.
