Albanese, Mark A. – Evaluation and the Health Professions, 1982
Findings regarding formats and scoring formulas for multiple-choice test items with more than one correct response are presented. Strong cluing effects in the Type K format, increasing the correct score percentage and reducing test reliability, recommend using the Type X format. Alternative scoring methods are discussed. (Author/CM)

Hambleton, Ronald K.; Powell, Sally – Evaluation and the Health Professions, 1983
To address the issues associated with testing standards, sets of context-setting variables and technical matters associated with standard-setting are presented to assist groups or committees desiring to set standards in a systematic way. (Author/CM)

Veloski, J. Jon; And Others – Evaluation and the Health Professions, 1990
Part III of the National Board Examination--a certifying examination of medical knowledge and patient management abilities--was assessed using 1,866 first-year residents. This 15-year study comparing Part III results with those of Parts I and II and with superiors' ratings indicates Part III's validity and provides a model for future research.…

Harasym, P. H.; And Others – Evaluation and the Health Professions, 1992
Findings from a study with approximately 200 first-year University of Calgary (Canada) nursing students provide evidence that the use of negation (e.g., not, except) should be limited in stems of multiple-choice test items and that a single-response negatively worded item should be converted to a multiple-response positively worded item. Bergstrom, Betty A.; Lunz, Mary E. – Evaluation and the Health Professions, 1992
The level of confidence in pass/fail decisions obtained with computerized adaptive tests and paper-and-pencil tests was greater for 645 medical technology students when the computer adaptive test implemented a 90 percent confidence stopping rule than for paper-and-pencil tests of comparable length. (SLD)

Shea, Judy A.; And Others – Evaluation and the Health Professions, 1992
Video and print formats of cardiovascular motion studies were compared for use as assessment measures of interpretive skills for 392 doctors taking a cardiovascular disease certification test. Although video studies were easier to interpret, the equivalence of both motion studies supports use of the print format in national examinations. (SLD)

Holmes, Susan E. – Evaluation and the Health Professions, 1986
A specific application of test equating is described, namely that of credentialing examination programs in the health professions. Considered are: (1) the role of test equating in the credentialing process; and (2) the issues that must be considered when implementing test equating in a credentialing examination program. (Author/LMO)

Blumberg, Phyllis – Evaluation and the Health Professions, 1981
The utility of general or select response formats for evaluating certain types of clinical competence is studied. Consideration of the suitability of an examination format to fulfill its intended purpose and the appropriateness of the questions included is recommended when designing an examination. (Author/AL)

Colliver, Jerry A.; And Others – Evaluation and the Health Professions, 1992
The presence and extent of overlap between checklist and written scores using data for over 400 medical students in 6 classes on an examination including clinical encounter stations with standardized patients were studied. Eighty-three cases used both measures. Written scores provide information in addition to that of the checklists. (SLD)

Harasym, P. H.; And Others – Evaluation and the Health Professions, 1980
Coded, as opposed to free response items, in a multiple choice physiology test had a cueing effect which raised students' scores, especially for lower achievers. Reliability of coded items was also lower. Item format and scoring method had an effect on test results. (GDC)

Colliver, Jerry A.; And Others – Evaluation and the Health Professions, 1991
A study was conducted to assess the effect of station position in a multiple-stations performance-based examination administered to 127 senior medical students. There was no evidence for a sequence effect on student performance, with no improvement on scores awarded for standardized cases across successive cases in the examination. (SLD)
