Scatter on the five specific scales in the McCarthy was examined to explore the types of ability profiles exhibited by normal children. This study evaluates the reliability of profile analysis for assessing differential abilities on the McCarthy Scales for Children's Abilities (MSCA). Subjects were enrolled in private schools. Comparison of the Goodenough-Harris and McCarthy scoring procedures for 60 kindergarten children's drawings yielded substantial agreement between the two scoring systems. Compared the Peabody Picture Vocabulary Test and McCarthy Scales of Children's Abilities for 35 preschool children identified as being "at risk." Indices of scatter on the WISC-R and McCarthy Scales were examined for 20 educable mentally retarded and 20 learning disabled children in relation to 20 matched controls and to standardization samples. Exceptional children exhibited more subtest scatter and variability than the standardization sample but not more than the control group. (Author/RD)

Learning disabled children performed lower than general education children on all five major scale indexes. A similar amount of scatter was present in the profiles of learning disabled and general education children. Three short forms of the McCarthy Scales of Children's Abilities (MSCA) have been developed to screen the cognitive skills of young children suspected of learning disorders and developmental delays.
