The Michigan Mathematics Early Placement Test (MMEPT) is an assessment instrument that gives 11th-grade students an appraisal of their mathematical skills in relation to college expectations. Students who take the test receive a report letter that tells them, based upon their test results, approximately where they would be placed in mathematics if they were entering college at the time of the test. The letter also describes the mathematics needs for two career fields of interest to them. Patterned after the Ohio Early Mathematics Placement Test, the MMEPT is sponsored by Michigan's Presidents Council of State Colleges and Universities and administered by the Glenn T. Seaborg Center for Teaching and Learning Science and Mathematics at Northern Michigan University. With state funding included in the Higher Education Appropriations Bill, the MMEPT was offered to all high schools in Michigan for the first time in 1986-87. Over 28,000 students from 345 of the 900 high schools took the test. This report discusses in detail the results of the MMEPT's first year.
