Stohlman, Trey – Journal of the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning, 2015
A good assessment plan combines many direct and indirect measures to validate the collected data. One often controversial assessment measure comes in the form of retention exams. Although assessment retention exams may come with faults, others advocate for their inclusion in program assessment. Objective-based tests may offer insight to…

Abu-Sayf, F. K. – Educational Technology, 1979
Compares methods of scoring multiple-choice tests and discusses right-number scoring, guessing, and omitted items. Test instructions and answer changing are addressed, and attempts to weight test items are reviewed. It is concluded that, since innovations in test scoring are not well-established, the number right method is most appropriate. (RAO)

Toppino, Thomas C.; Luipersbeck, Susan M. – Journal of Educational Research, 1993
This study investigated the generality of the negative suggestion effect in objective tests. College students read text passages and took objective tests. Later, they rated statements' validity, including statements from the initial test. Students were more likely to consider objectively false statements true if they had appeared on the earlier…

Carstens, Paul W.; McKeag, Robert A. – 1982
This study utilized a test, re-test procedure to investigate what effects a change in the order, or sequence, of test items would have on student performance. College juniors (n=102) were given a 50-item multiple-choice and matching item test on the general subject of educational measurement. The items had no particular sequence, but had simply…

Alliger, R. J.; Harvey, A. L. – 1984
This article discusses practical and theoretical problems related to the measurement of formal operations. The first section of the article discusses problems in measuring formal operations using the clinical interview method. These problems include the lack of both a standardized interview and a uniform scoring procedure. Section two discusses…

Kolstad, Rosemarie K.; And Others – Educational Research Quarterly, 1983
Complex multiple choice (CMC) items are frequently used to test knowledge about repetitive information. In two independent comparisons, performance on the CMC items surpassed that of the multiple true-false clusters. Data indicate that performance on CMC items is inflated, and distractors on CMC items fail to prevent guessing. (Author/PN)

J Chem Educ, 1969
Summarizes the views of two teachers who hold widely divergent views on what can be called classical examination methods - essay papers and objective exams. One of these authors is an Englishman, the other an American, but their views, while obviously conditioned by training, are shared or questioned by many colleagues regardless of national…

Garvin, Alfred D.; Ralston, Nancy C. – 1970
Confidence Weighting (CW), after Ebel, and Multiple Responding (MR), after Coombs, are compared empirically to determine which improved test reliability more in the case of a course pretest derived from the final examination. It was hypothesized that MR, which purportedly measures partial knowledge, would be more effective than CW, which measures…

Wang, Jianjun – 1995
Effects of blind guessing on the success of passing true-false and multiple-choice tests are investigated under a stochastic binomial model. Critical values of guessing are thresholds which signify when the effect of guessing is negligible. By checking a table of critical values assembled in this paper, one can make a decision with 95% confidence…

Ebel, Robert L. – Journal of Educational Measurement, 1982
Reasonable and practical solutions to two major problems confronting the developer of any test of educational achievement (what to measure and how to measure it) are proposed, defended, and defined. (Author/PN)
