In this case study of a residential treatment center for emotionally disturbed adolescents, evaluative data demonstrated that Gestalt Therapy was neither designed nor intended for use in an institutional setting with severely disturbed young adolescents, with people of lower socioeconomic status or of low verbal skill and intelligence. A system of staff and patient-staff meetings was initiated to clarify the psychodynamics of ward interactions and to reduce conflicts. Reports findings on factors associated with children who terminate psychotherapy prematurely. From a sample of 45 children with an average age of 13.5 years, it was found that children are more likely to remain in treatment if the therapist is perceived as professional and caring, and if the treatment plan is adequately explained.
