Öhrstedt, Maria; Scheja, Max – Educational Research, 2018

Hastings, Nigel; Schwieso, Joshua – Educational Research, 1995
One primary class moved from seating in rows to groups to rows, the other from groups to rows to groups. In both, on-task behavior was higher in rows. In a second study using rows for individual work, time on task increased substantially and, for a target group of three disruptive pupils, it increased dramatically. (SK)

Croll, Paul; Moses, Diana – Educational Research, 1988
Data derived from observation of 32 classrooms (eight- and nine-year-olds) are analyzed to consider the relationship between teaching methods and the amount of class time pupils spend on curriculum tasks. Results indicate that classrooms with higher levels of whole-class interaction have higher levels of pupil time on task, even during periods of…

This study examined children's engagement in a primary school class when no additional help was present, when parents were involved normally, and when parents and staff were following RM (Room Management) procedures. Comparisons indicate useful gains in engagement when employing RM. (Author/CT)

Boniface, David – Educational Research, 1985
The amount of notes and textbook use were related to candidates' previously measured abilities in the area, to their scores on the examination; and to their responses to a questionnaire. Results indicated that those who devoted more examination time to using notes and texts obtained less good scores and had obtained low scores on previous…

Smyth, John; Fasoli, Lyn – Educational Research, 2007
Background: There is increasing evidence that schools internationally are not meeting the needs of increasing numbers of young people, especially those at the secondary level, and whose backgrounds have placed them at disadvantage. The evidence is that significant numbers of young people are becoming disconnected from school. While the official…
