A peer tutorial program in the basic sciences implemented at the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston is evaluated. The grades of students receiving peer tutorials were analyzed and questionnaires were mailed to each participant soliciting their evaluation of services received. A program providing successful peer tutoring in nine of 10 basic science courses in the first two years of medical school is described, and the management of such a program is discussed. Positive program effects on both tutors and students in academic difficulty are emphasized. (MSE)

Experience with a year-long tutorial for minority medical students suggests that cognitive problems of students having academic difficulty may not be resolvable without dealing with affective considerations. Recommendations are given for dealing with affective issues. (Editor/LBH)

A method of organization of self-instructional units into tiers corresponding to different levels of advancement is described.
