Cohen, Sanford – Industrial and Labor Relations Review, 1979
The author considers charges that public sector unionism diminishes democracy by requiring a sharing of public authority with private bodies that too often exerts disproportionate influence on government decisions. Data from a 1986 survey of employers and a 1982-83 survey of union organizers found that firms' responses to union organizing drives were consistent with the motive of profit maximization and that management opposition has been an important determinant of the decline of unionism. (JOW)

Kuruvilla, Sarosh; And Others – Industrial and Labor Relations Review, 1990
Results of ordinary least squares analysis of worker survey data (n=6,651) suggest that members' participation in unions is positively related to many of same factors in Japan as in North America. Some findings at odds with those of Western studies are that older and better educated workers are less likely to participate and job status is…

Cooke, William N. – Industrial and Labor Relations Review, 1994
Data from 841 Michigan manufacturing firms indicates that employee participation programs contribute substantially more to business performance in unionized than in nonunionized firms. Profit and gain sharing had more impact on performance in nonunionized firms. (SK)

Kuhn, Peter; Sweetman, Arthur – Industrial and Labor Relations Review, 1998
Data from two Canadian surveys showed that only 32% of dislocated workers had unionized jobs before displacement; their wage loss represented about 80% of wages lost by all displaced workers surveyed. Losing union status was associated with large wage losses regardless of whether they switched industries. (SK)

Baugh, William H.; Stone, Joe A. – Industrial and Labor Relations Review, 1982
This paper provides evidence that confirms the results of previous studies that teacher unionism produced relatively small wage gains during the early 1970s, but it also shows that union gains increased substantially in the late 1970s. (Author/CT)
