During the 1970s, most Black population growth in ten Florida cities occurred in White census tracts contiguous to tracts that were at least half-Black in 1970. Argues that in order to understand the future of American cities one must be aware that people adapt to and manipulate city life by changing the categories by which major urban phenomena and processes are perceived and analyzed.
