A number of academic, public, regional, and state libraries use WorldCat Local (WCL) as a resource location tool that enables users to search, find, and gain access to a range of print and electronic resources. Templeton, Thomas Clay – Library Quarterly, 2008
Place reminds us to tailor our professional work to the shifting concerns, and indeed the shifting criteria, of our shifting constituencies, rather than to a placeless professional vision of what librarianship, society, and literacy should be. Every place maker must make do, make sense, and make place in an environment that is technologically…

Baker, S. L. – Library Quarterly, 1986
Based on a doctoral dissertation, this paper describes a study of why displays of books increase use. Two hypotheses were tested using standard pretest-posttest experimental designs at two small Illinois public libraries. Increased accessibility and visibility were found to be causes, while narrowing the browser's choice was not. (Author/EM)

Adkins, Denice; Hussey, Lisa – Library Quarterly, 2006
Libraries share a perception of embracing and providing for all users. However, they also share a common philosophical stance shaped by librarians' individual discursive formations and the dominant cultural hegemony that values some users over others. Latinos constitute one of the fastest-growing, nondominant populations in the United States, and…

Durfee, Linda J. – Library Quarterly, 1986
This study, which focused on the extent to which Lake Forest College (Illinois) students were aware of library reference services, used interviews and a revised version of a survey used elsewhere. Findings showed student awareness to be relatively high, and that the methodology would work well in other undergraduate settings. (Author/EM)

Morse, Philip M. – Library Quarterly, 1972
Mathematical models of library operations are presented which describe the amount of use made of resources by a user in a visit, the distribution of book circulation in a collection, the dependence of circulation on time, and the effect of multiple copies on user satisfaction. (9 references) (Author/NH)

Dewdney, Patricia; Michell, Gillian – Library Quarterly, 1997
Draws on theory from linguistics (particularly speech act theory), philosophy, and cognitive science to show how the ambiguous nature of "why" questions may lead to unproductive or even hostile responses in the reference interview. Suggests two main strategies for resolving this conflict, contextualization and the use of neutral…

Janes, Joseph W.; McKinney, Renee – Library Quarterly, 1992
This study examined judgments of document relevance made by library science graduate students who were not the originators of the queries for which the documents were retrieved. Although the secondary judgments compared well with those of the original users, it was found that secondary judges used document record fields differently and had a…

Black, Alistair – Library Quarterly, 2006
The Mass-Observation Archive contains a large amount of evidence, stretching back to the 1930s, of the British public's daily lives and its attitudes to local, national, and international issues and events. The archive's data-collection method takes the form of essay-style contributions submitted from anonymous volunteer correspondents who write…

Swanson, Don R. – Library Quarterly, 1986
The objective relevance of a document to a request is crucial to the design and testing of bibliographic retrieval systems, while subjective relevance is paramount in the use of such systems. The distinction provides a rationale for a trial-and-error mode of interaction with information systems. (Author/EM)

Campbell, David E.; Shlechter, Theodore M. – Library Quarterly, 1979
Presents a research study using three data-gathering methods--interview, behavioral diary, and behavioral map--to determine the effect of library design on student behavior. Gluck, Myke; And Others – Library Quarterly, 1996
Investigated public librarians' interactions with patrons seeking geographic information with a sense-making (timeline) survey.
