Pampel, Fred – Social Forces, 2011
Arguments about the spread of gender egalitarian values through the population highlight several sources of change. Rowe, Reba; Snizek, William E. – Work and Occupations: An International Sociological Journal, 1995
General Social Survey data from 1973-90 were analyzed to identify the work value preferences of 7,436 full-time workers (income, security, working hours, advancement opportunities, accomplishment). No support was found for differences between men's and women's work values. Preferences depended more on age, education, and occupational prestige. (SK)

Agnew, Robert – Suicide and Life-Threatening Behavior, 1998
Drawing on three leading theories of crime/deviance, a model is developed and tested to explain individual variation in the approval of suicide. Data from a national survey are used to test predictions. Predictions are partially supported. Strongest correlates of suicide approval are education, political liberalism, and certain religious…

Ritzman, Rosemary L.; Tomaskovic-Devey, Donald – Social Forces, 1992
Analysis of national survey data showed that the equity principle (those who contribute more should receive higher rewards) is a dominant U.S. social value, varying with education but not other life-chance differences. Equality counternorms were related to all life-chance variables, particularly race and income. Contains 30 references. (SV)

This paper reports a comparative investigation identifying salient sociological variables associated with the perception of well-being by the U.S. metropolitan and nonmetropolitan populations. Subjective well-being in general and life satisfaction in particular were examined. Data used in this study were derived from the 1978 and 1988 General…
