Taha, Haitham; Taha, Hanada; Shaheen, Huda – Journal of Psycholinguistic Research, 2023
The current study examined the effect of the linguistic status of the verbal previewing strategy on the outcomes of reading comprehension tasks among second (N = 25, age 7.08 ± 0.3), and sixth-grade students (N = 25, age 11.75 ± 0.25), with typical reading development. The texts for each group were carefully matched and were divided into three…

Taha, Mohamed M.; El Nagar, Hosny Z. – Insights into Learning Disabilities, 2018
The purpose of this study is to construct and evaluate diagnostic battery tests of verbal and non-verbal learning disabilities for students in the Arabic schools. 612 students were in the 3rd, 4th and 5th grades of primary school were involved, mostly from Egypt and Saudi Arabia. Their ages ranged from 7.94-10.98 with mean age = 9.62 and SD =…

Bergeson, Kristi; Rosheim, Kay – International Journal of Education in Mathematics, Science and Technology, 2018
This study explored 6th grade students reading of science text on the iPad to better understand how students with varying strengths of comprehending text and current academic abilities interpret text on their iPads. Our study sample compared three students with strong reading scores based on informal reading inventories, standardized tests, and…

Poulsen, Mads; Gravgaard, Amalie K. D. – Scientific Studies of Reading, 2016
This study investigated the relationship between syntactic comprehension at the sentence level and text-level comprehension. The study isolated the specific contribution of syntax by asking whether sentence comprehension efficiency of difficult syntactic constructions explained variance in text comprehension after controlling for sentence…

H. Lee Swanson; Catherine M. Lussier; Michael J. Orosco – Journal of Learning Disabilities, 2015
This study investigated the role of strategy instruction and working memory capacity (WMC) on word problem solving accuracy in children with (n = 100) and without (n = 92) math difficulties (MD). Within classrooms, children in Grades 2 and 3 were randomly assigned to one of four treatment conditions: verbal-only strategies (e.g., underlining…

Sood, Vishal – Journal on Educational Psychology, 2013
For identifying children with four major kinds of verbal learning disabilities viz. reading disability, speech and language comprehension disability, writing disability and mathematics disability, the present task was undertaken to construct and standardize verbal learning disabilities checklist. This checklist was developed by keeping in view the…

Rose, Michael C.; And Others – Journal of Learning Disabilities, 1983
Studies involving 30 learning-disabled elementary students support the contention that reading comprehension difficulties among learning-disabled children are partly due to inefficient memorization strategies, and demonstrate the efficacy of practical, cost-effective mnemonic training procedures which significantly increase reading comprehension…

Anderson, Richard C.; And Others – Journal of Verbal Learning and Verbal Behavior, 1976
Three experiments investigated the hypothesis that, when interpreted in context, general terms are typically encoded on the basis of an instantiation. Results indicated that a particular term naming the expected instantiation of a general term was a better cue for recall of a sentence than the general term itself. (CHK)

Rothkopf, E. Z.; Billington, M. J. – Journal of Verbal Learning and Verbal Behavior, 1983
Examines whether, after a single reading, the recall of text elements depends on the length of the passage. Results show more detail was remembered 23 hours later for short passages than for long. Concludes that negative effects of passage length on test performance were due in part to acquisition processes rather than retrieval. (EKN)

Manelis, Leon – Journal of Verbal Learning and Verbal Behavior, 1976
Three experiments investigated a characteristic of the propositions that underlie sentences. For some of the sentences tested, the same concepts occurred repeatedly across the underlying propositions; for others, concepts were seldom repeated. Repetitions were shown to facilitate sentence processing. (Author/RM)

Miller, Paul – American Annals of the Deaf, 2002
This study examined the short term recall of serially presented verbal information by 49 prelingually deafened and 39 hearing students (mean grade level 6). Findings suggest that neither discrepancy in the ordered short-term recall of verbal materials nor discrepancies in reading comprehension are directly assignable to differences in memory…

Perfetti, Charles A.; Goldman, Susan R. – Journal of Verbal Learning and Verbal Behavior, 1976
A study is reported in which short-term memory capacity, estimated by a probe digit task, and memory for structured language, measured by a probe discourse task, were investigated in an experiment with third and fifth grade IQ-matched children representing two levels of reading comprehension skill. (Author/RM)
Descriptors: Cognitive Processes, Elementary School Students, Learning Processes, Memory
Thorndyke, Perry W. – Journal of Verbal Learning and Verbal Behavior, 1976
This study examined how people use inferences to aid comprehension of connected discourse. (Author/RM)
